Kumeu River

This vintage sees the continuation of the "Maté's" style of Chardonnay, originating from this defined superior vineyard site exhibiting it's own nuances and shades of aroma and flavour. Mate's Vineyard is always set apart from the Kumeu River Chardonnay with its lifted sweet fruit aroma that is akin to pears. On the palate we see the extra concentration, and length of flavour but the wine still seems more refined and taut than the Kumeu River Chardonnay. Certainly a wine that will benefit from bottle age of 4-6 years.

Wine Advocate

The 2006 Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay has a different take on the vintage: earthier on the nose with hazelnut and butterscotch developing with time. This has the most elegance and harmony of the three single vineyards with just perfect acidity and harmonious, cohesive finish inflected with apricot and white peach. Very refined, this would challenge the superiority of many white Burgundy wines. Again, it should drink well between 3-10 years.

Score: 95. —Neal Martin, April 2008.

Wine Spectator

Tightly wound, with an impressive core of intensity to tangy lemon, nectarine and crushed stone flavors. Oak nuances integrate nicely, with sea salt and vibrant acidity focusing the lingering finish. Best from 2010 through 2015.

Score: 91. —Daniel Sogg, December 31, 2008.

Wine Enthusiast

The 2006 Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay is the tightest and least evolved of KR's 2006s, showing slightly nutty, toasted-grain notes upfront, followed by crisp, taut flavors of pineapple and lime. Finishes long, with vibrant citrus flavors. Best from 2010-2015.

Score: 91. —Joe Czerwinski, December 01, 2008.
